Thailand box jellyfish death

In early August 2026, a 13‑year‑old boy, Nanthaphat Boonplod, died after being stung by a box jellyfish while swimming near Ban Fai Tha beach in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, Thailand. The incident followed a charity football match; three other swimmers were also stung but survived.

Thai authorities, including the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, classified the case as the district’s first fatal box‑jellyfish sting. They responded by tightening beach surveillance, installing additional warning signs and vinegar‑first‑aid stations, and issuing new safety protocols that stress immediate removal from water, use of vinegar, and CPR if needed. Officials linked the early appearance of the jellyfish to climate change and reduced predator numbers, noting previous fatalities in Thailand involving the same species.
