In Thailand, academic and government officials are calling for modernized regulations to manage the growing data center industry. An academic from Thammasat University suggested that the government establish a Data Center Policy Committee and adjust Board of Investment incentives to better manage electricity, water, and environmental impacts. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt echoed these concerns, noting that legal loopholes have allowed some operators to register as warehouses to avoid standard requirements. In response, the Thai government announced a new regulatory framework to establish national standards, with Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas chairing a Data Center Policy Committee. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized that these measures seek to prevent speculation and crack down on illegal operations, such as unauthorized cryptocurrency mining. In Bangkok, Governor Chadchart Sittipunt confirmed that data centers will now be classified under the industrial category to improve safety standards. As the industry expands, the actual economic impact of these investments is facing scrutiny. While the Board of Investment reported that 42 data center projects worth 750 billion baht applied for promotion between 2024 and March 2026, Samart Rajapolsit, former Deputy Governor of Bangkok, warned that high investment figures do not automatically equate to high domestic economic value. Political pressure has intensified, with People’s Party MP Supanut Meenachainant criticizing the government for a delayed response to warnings issued in 2024. He proposed specific amendments to the Building Control Act, City Planning Law, and environmental laws to ensure zoning compliance and mandatory Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA). By September 2026, independent politician Suradech Yasawat urged the Prime Minister to address safety concerns regarding hyperscale data centers located in Bangkok and near residential communities.
