Thailand is responding to widespread flooding that has impacted 25 provinces and 50 districts in Bangkok, affecting over 170,000 households and resulting in at least eight reported deaths. The Ministry of Commerce has implemented price controls on essential goods, while the Ministry of Defense uses military vehicles to deliver necessities to isolated areas. To mitigate the rising cost of living, officials planned to allocate approximately 300 million baht from the central budget for the ‘Thai Helps Thai’ project. As of October 11, relief efforts expanded significantly. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), working with the Government Savings Bank, transferred over 650 million baht to more than 75,000 households across 31 provinces. For disasters occurring before October 1, eligible households receive 9,000 baht for living expenses plus additional aid for property damage. For incidents from October 1 onwards, a national disaster insurance system provides up to 100,000 baht per household for flood damage and up to 2 million baht per person in the event of death. By October 15, concerns intensified regarding budget shortages. On October 19, Paradorn Prisnanantakul, Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the 2026 central budget for flood relief—approximately 4.7 billion baht—has been fully utilized. To assist an estimated 1 million affected households, the DDPM is preparing prepared to propose a budget expansion of over 10 billion baht. On October 19 and 20, officials addressed the funding gap. Paradorn noted that while provincial relief has been efficient, Bangkok has faced verification bottlenecks, warning that fraudulent claims will face legal consequences. Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul defended confirmed the administration, stating Cabinet approved an additional 10,508 million baht for flood relief, noting that over 700,000 households have already received payments. Addressing claims of fund depletion, the Prime Minister clarified that the 4.7 billion baht previously used was retained redirected from the 2026 central budget to ensure a rapid response. He emphasized a ‘first come, first serve’ approach to speed up disbursements.
