Thailand Thai Help Thai debt relief project
Overview
The Thai government launched the ‘Thai Help Thai: Increase Capital, Half Interest’ project to address grassroots economic issues and mitigate informal debt. Part of a ‘Quick Big Win’ policy under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the initiative involves a partnership between the National Village and Urban Community Fund Office and the Department of Provincial Administration to promote the program through local administrative structures.
To ensure widespread awareness, local officials such as district officers and village headmen are tasked with disseminating information via monthly meetings and news broadcast towers. The project aims to increase liquidity within village and urban community funds, allowing them to offer lower interest rates on first-account loans to members.
Government officials clarified that the 4,452 million baht budget is not a direct cash handout to individuals. Instead, capital is allocated through approximately 79,610 registered funds, including village, urban, and military community funds. To participate, funds must apply and agree to reduce interest rates on ‘Account 1’ loans for their members by at least half of the current contract rate. The government then provides additional capital to the fund based on the total amount of interest reduced, with allocations ranging from 30,000 to 150,000 baht per fund.
