Thalawathugoda agency heist investigation

Overview

In September 2026, Sri Lankan police arrested the alleged mastermind and getaway driver involved in an armed robbery at a tourism and foreign employment agency in Thalawathugoda. The heist, which took place on September 1, involved suspects who threatened staff and stole cash and gold jewellery.

Investigations identified the mastermind as a former deputy representative of the agency who was motivated by debt and personal humiliation. The group utilized a rented vehicle with fake number plates and recruited accomplices with the help of a former civilian police employee. During subsequent raids, officers recovered Rs. 18.5 million of the stolen funds, the getaway vehicle, and a stolen motorcycle.
