Following the transition of Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) into public ownership in May 2026, the operator has announced a major passenger comfort initiative. ~~Starting in 2027,~~ Supported by the Department for Transport, a two-year program starting in 2027 will replace over 60,000 standard class seat cushions and backrests across 115 ~~trains to address complaints regarding uncomfortable seating.~~ trains. The upgrades also include installing seat-back tables on 70 trains. While first-class passengers will receive upgraded seat base cushions, their existing backrest designs will remain unchanged. In conjunction with these long-term improvements, service disruptions are scheduled for late August 2026. ~~Bus~~ From 10pm on Saturday, August 29, until 8am on Monday, August 31, bus replacement services will be utilized for Thameslink and Great Northern routes south of Peterborough and Royston ~~due to engineering work.~~ towards London. Affected sections include services between Hitchin and Peterborough, Bedford and Peterborough, Hitchin and Royston, Luton Airport Parkway and Stevenage, St Albans City and Stevenage, Hertford North and Stevenage, and parts of Potters Bar. This engineering work is part of the £1.4 billion East Coast Digital Programme, which aims to implement digital in-cab ~~signalling~~ signalling. This technology replaces traditional lineside signals with real-time information sent directly to drivers to improve railway resilience and reliability.
