The Gambia fiscal and IMF financing status
Overview
The Gambia has reached a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) following a mission to Banjul. This agreement involves the sixth review of the country’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program and the third review of its Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), potentially unlocking approximately $28 million in additional financing. The IMF noted that the economy has remained resilient despite energy supply disruptions, with growth projected at 5.1 percent for 2026 and 2027.
Concurrently, the National Assembly passed a D48.6 billion (US$666.5 million) spending bill for the 2027 fiscal year. The budget allocates D16.17 billion (US$221.8 million) toward national debt service, which accounts for one third of total government-funded spending. This allocation for debt repayment exceeds the combined amounts designated for education and health.
