Theory on fire usage and human language evolution

Researchers from the University of St Andrews and Dartmouth College have proposed a theory suggesting that the use of fire acted as a catalyst for the evolution of human language.

Initial findings suggest that social gatherings around campfires may have driven linguistic development by encouraging discussions about the past, distant locations, or invented concepts. This theory challenges the assumption that language evolved primarily for functional coordination, such as hunting or tool manufacturing, noting that other primates already manage complex tasks through non-verbal communication.

Further details indicate that between 2 and 1.5 million years ago, the incorporation of fire into hominin social life created a unique nocturnal niche. Researchers Catherine Hobaiter and Nathaniel J. Dominy argue that fire facilitated a transition from gesture-based communication to abstract, generative spoken language. Because fire provided a shared visual stimulus and made long-distance gestural communication more difficult, it may have favored oral narration and social synchrony over the intentional gestures used by great apes.
