Thessaloniki regional development and infrastructure

Discussions regarding the Thessaloniki Multimodal Logistics Center (DETHE) initially focused on determining the strategic priorities for the Greek government regarding regional development and infrastructure planning.

Following these debates, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis outlined a broader vision to establish Thessaloniki as the economic, transport, and logistics capital of the Balkans. This strategy involves several major infrastructure projects, including the expansion of the Thessaloniki metro, the construction of a new ring road flyover, and investments in the Port of Thessaloniki and railway connections.

Additionally, the government is prioritizing the development of a new logistics center at the former Gonou military complex and plans to invest approximately 300 million euros to modernize the Egnatia motorway. Social infrastructure is also a component of the regional strategy, highlighted by the expected completion of a new pediatric hospital in early 2027.
