Schools in Thessaloniki are set to follow a modified schedule from October 23 to October 28, 2026, due to local and national commemorations. During this period, students will participate in mandatory events honoring the ‘Ohi’ (No) of 1940 and Greece’s resistance during World War II. The disruption includes a local holiday on Monday, October 26, for Saint Demetrios, and the national ‘OXI’ anniversary on Wednesday, October 28. Prior to these commemorations, Greece faced massive nationwide mobilization. On Wednesday, October 21, widespread strikes and demonstrations occurred across more than 50 cities. In Athens, approximately 10,000 protesters marched toward Syntagma Square, where students established camps to protest the housing crisis. In Komotini, university students protested inadequate dormitory capacity. On October 22, demonstrations expanded to include pensioners and educators. In Thessaloniki, retirees led by Dimos Koumbouris, President of the Federation of IKA Retirees Greece, marched toward the Ministry of Macedonia-Thrace. They protested economic policies that they claim make it difficult to afford necessities like food, electricity, and medicine, demanding the restoration of the 13th and 14th pension payments. Simultaneously, in Magnesia, kindergarten and primary school educators held a strike at Agios Nikolaos Square. They cited the degradation of public education, specifically mentioning class mergers, poor infrastructure, increased bureaucracy, and violence against teachers. Like the retirees, these educators called for improved financial compensation and the reinstatement of 13th and 14th month salaries. In Patras, Mayor Kostas Peletidis joined rallies, criticizing the government for prioritizing military expenditures, such as Patriot missiles, over education and healthcare funding. In response, Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki noted investments in student residences, while Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis committed subsidies for energy costs.
