Authorities in Thessaloniki are investigating a fatal attack on the Nestora family home involving gas canisters, which resulted in the death of Vagia Nestora, mother of politician Aphrodite Nestora. Criminal charges against two suspects, aged 29 and 26, have been upgraded to include terrorism-related offenses, such as terrorist organization, attempted murder, explosion, and arson. Two additional co-defendants—a 24-year-old apartment owner and a 25-year-old who allegedly handled keys to the property—are also being held in custody. Aphrodite Nestora characterized the incident as a “highly organized and systematic ambush designed to cause death.” Investigators are also examining potential links between this attack and two other arson incidents targeting the homes of Zisis Ioakeimovitch and Savvas Anastasiadis that occurred on the same day. The attack involved an improvised explosive device composed of gas canisters and flammable liquid, which also caused injuries to several family members. In recent developments, a 24-year-old student and owner of the apartment used during the attack provided a supplementary statement to an investigating magistrate. The suspect denied involvement in the killing, claiming he was unaware of the true purpose for which the premises were being used. Despite this denial, he remains in custody as the indictment is expanded to include charges of murder with potential intent, involvement in a terrorist organization, possession of explosives, explosion, and arson.
