In late July 2026, construction on Thessaloniki’s major transport projects was well under way. A 4‑km, 22‑m‑wide 4-km, 22-m-wide flyover—set to become Greece’s longest bridge—was progressing on the Eastern Inner Ring Road, with a target completion date of 16 May 2027. Alongside the flyover, the city’s metro line was being extended to Kalamaria with five new stations, expected to serve around 63 000 63,000 daily passengers and cut road traffic by roughly 12 000 12,000 vehicles. On 31 July, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport opened a call for €75 million in supplementary funding under the 2026‑2030 2026-2030 Sectoral Development Programme. The allocation will finance an additional 1.61 km of road and related upgrades within the 7.6 km elevated highway, bringing the overall project budget to about €530 million. Applications are accepted until 31 December 2026, with evaluation within 60 days and financing available through 2030. By early August, the government announced an accelerated timetable for key infrastructure ahead of the next national elections. The flyover was reported to be roughly 60 % 60% complete and still slated for completion in the first half of 2027, with capacity expected to double from 5 000 5,000 to 10 000 10,000 vehicles per hour. The metro extension to Kalamaria was projected to open within weeks, following data that the existing line had already reduced city‑centre city-centre traffic by over 15 % 15% in its first 18 months. By mid-August, the Kalamaria metro expansion—a 4.8-km project adding the Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini, and Mikra stations—entered its final stages. Following technical inspections and certification, commercial operation is targeted for August 2026.
