Thessaly forest ecosystem and climate resilience symposium efforts

In October 2026, the Thessaly Region and the General Secretariat of Forests organized a scientific seminar in Larissa to address the health and resilience of regional forest ecosystems. The seminar focused on modern threats including desiccation, pathogens, climate pressures, and the impacts of atmospheric pollution. Specific discussions included the consequences of Storm Daniel, the role of forests in civil protection, and issues such as spruce necrosis and bark-eating insects. During the symposium, Vice-Regional Governor for the Environment Photi Lamprinidis emphasized the necessity for coordinated planning and timely intervention among stakeholders to manage climate challenges and implement measures for forest prevention, protection, and restoration. Following the forest symposium, the EL.A.S. organization scheduled an open event for October 22, 2026, in Larissa titled ‘Are we ready for the next Daniel? – Climate Crisis: Prevention, Resilience and Critical Infrastructure.’ This forum aims to evaluate progress in flood protection and infrastructure resilience three years after Storm Daniel. The program includes a keynote by Thessaly Regional Governor Dimitris Kouretas and specialized panels discussing science, hydrogeology, and community involvement in the face of extreme weather events.
