In late July 2026, the Regional Council of Thessaly approved the establishment of a new nine-member Committee of Environment, Agricultural Sector and Development Planning. The strategy aims to address critical challenges such as water scarcity, devastating floods, and heavy reliance on irrigated crops by linking agricultural policy with water management, energy, infrastructure, and market access. During these sessions, Governor Dimitris Kouretas emphasized that the CAP should function as a ‘social contract’ between society and land managers, addressing the climate crisis, farmer income, rural aging, energy dependence, and food chain security. Deputy Regional Governor Dimitrios Tsetsilas noted that the objective is to ensure the voices of approximately 150 producers shape the final policy submitted to the European Commission and the Greek state.
