Thiel's Antichrist theory on tech regulation

In July 2026, billionaire Peter Thiel expanded his long‑standing critique of regulatory oversight into a formal “Antichrist” theory, describing a technocratic regulator who would use safety, ethics and climate language to justify sweeping authority over technology and climate policy. The concept first appeared in a private four‑part lecture series in San Francisco, was publicised through a leaked audio report, and was detailed in two essays published by the conservative journal First Things.

A week later Thiel took the theory to an international audience, delivering talks in Rome and Buenos Aires. In a recorded interview with journalist Sam Wolfe for First Things, he warned that modern bureaucrats, climate regulators, AI‑safety advocates and international bodies could employ the language of peace and security to create a centralized technocratic order that scapegoats powerful individuals and firms. He framed the argument with references to René Girard and Vladimir Solovyov, extending the debate from private essays to a broader public discussion.
