Game designer Ron Gilbert announced that development has begun on Thimbleweed Park 2, a point-and-click adventure scheduled for an early 2028 release. The project will feature the original development team and is described by Gilbert as being “more Thimbleweed Park” in style, though it is not a direct prequel or sequel. Following the initial announcement, Gilbert confirmed that the project is being self-published after securing funding from an anonymous wealthy fan. Gilbert chose this private investment route to avoid what he described as unfair traditional publishing terms and to bypass the uncertainty of a Kickstarter campaign. The new funding arrangement provides a budget exceeding the $1 million cost of the original game. Gilbert noted that the budget is intended to cover approximately two years of development, account for inflation, and ensure fair compensation for the team. Additionally, Gilbert addressed the future of the Monkey Island series, stating that creating a new installment would be complicated because brand rights are held by Disney. He indicated that Disney prefers working with large corporations rather than small independent studios, making direct collaboration difficult.
