In late September 2026, Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Thomas Müller expressed uncertainty regarding his professional future, stating there were “no concrete answers” regarding his status after the current Major League Soccer season. Shortly thereafter, the 37-year-old German veteran signed a contract extension with the Whitecaps, committing him to the club as a Designated Player through June 30, 2027. This agreement allows Müller to participate in the league’s transitional ‘sprint season’ before MLS shifts to a summer-to-spring international calendar. Since joining the club as a free agent in August 2025, Müller has been a central figure in the team's success, recording 19 goals and 12 assists in 45 appearances. His leadership was instrumental in guiding the Whitecaps to a Canadian Championship victory, a Western Conference title, and their first MLS Cup final. Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster noted that Müller has helped the club reach new heights and has strengthened the team's winning mentality. However, on October 9, 2026, Müller was sidelined by a newly diagnosed thigh/hamstring injury sustained during a 3-1 loss to the Chicago Fire. Whitecaps coach Jesper Sörensen confirmed that the recovery timeline remains undetermined, and Müller will miss the upcoming road match against Los Angeles FC. Sörensen expressed confidence in the squad's depth, noting that the team must grow through such challenges as they approach the final seven matches of the regular season. Despite this setback and a recent run of two wins in six matches, the Whitecaps continue to lead the MLS Western Conference with a three-point lead over St. Louis City SC and FC Dallas. Following the injury, the Whitecaps also recorded a 1-1 draw against Los Angeles FC.
