Under the binational “Zona ‘Zona Austral Resiliente” Resiliente’ project, the Government of Tierra del Fuego and Chile’s SENAPRED are conducting technical exchanges to strengthen disaster response. The initiative focuses on improving prevention and community integration regarding seismic and tsunami risks in the shared region. Technical teams have conducted field visits to Puerto Almanza to evaluate vulnerabilities, evacuation routes, and emergency infrastructure in Ushuaia, including the 911 Emergency Center and the Volunteer Firefighters Headquarters. A major coastal evacuation drill is was scheduled for November in Ushuaia, with subsequent drills planned for Tolhuin and Río Grande to unify technical criteria and contingency plans. Building on these efforts, Juan Carlos Andrades, director general of Chile’s National Service for Prevention and Response to Disasters (Senapred), stated that the initiative aims to shift focus from “mere response to proactive mitigation and preparation.” The collaboration emphasizes coordination between civil society, public entities, and the business sector. This enhanced cooperation follows a previous incident where a strong earthquake in the Drake Passage caused confusion in Ushuaia regarding response protocols, while populations in Cabo de Hornos were already mobilizing. Meanwhile, Chile’s National Seismological Center continues to monitor seismic activity caused by the movement of the Nazca and South American tectonic plates.
