Tierra del Fuego natural gas cost escalation

Overview

A study by the Universidad Nacional de Tierra del Fuego (UNTDF) indicates a sharp rise in natural gas costs for residents in the Tierra del Fuego region between 2024 and 2026. Research conducted by the Observatorio Social, Político y Económico (OSPE) shows that the impact of a representative gas bill on the Total Basic Basket (CBT) increased from 1.74% in April 2024 to 11.13% by April 2026.

This increase exceeds the 10% international threshold used to define energy poverty. Researchers noted extreme escalations in fixed charges, with some residential categories seeing costs multiply by as much as 101 times, while the fixed charge for the R2-1 consumer category reportedly experienced a 10,042% increase.

Contributing factors include the deregulation of the wholesale market and legislative changes like the new Ley de Zona Fría, which has reduced available discounts for many households. Researchers emphasized that in subantarctic latitudes, reducing heating is not a viable option for families without risking health and habitability. The investigation noted difficulties in accessing historical data and documentation from the utility provider, Camuzzi.
