TISS student legal case and investigation

Overview

Legal proceedings and investigations have intensified regarding a memorial event held for the late Delhi University professor G N Saibaba. The case involves allegations that participants at the gathering raised slogans in support of jailed activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam.

In August 2026, a Mumbai Sessions Court rejected anticipatory bail applications for two Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) students, including Abhirup Paul. The judge noted that the accused were expected to “respect the law of the land.” While seven other students in the same case were granted bail, the court ordered custodial interrogation for those denied.

Following the bail denial, Mumbai Police arrested Paul. The investigation has since expanded to include TISS professors, who have been issued notices regarding allegedly “suspicious WhatsApp messages” sent to Paul. Authorities are currently examining deleted Signal group chats and verifying fieldwork reports to determine the extent of the involvement.
