Togo and China are expanding bilateral cooperation across economic, political, and maritime sectors. In early October 2026, representatives from Togo and Chinese businesses met in Lomé to address the business climate. The meeting resulted in 12 measures to improve fiscal relations, including the designation of high-level focal points by the Office Togolais des Recettes (OTR) to assist Chinese firms. Other initiatives include the creation of a bilingual French-Chinese practical guide for tax obligations and training on accounting standards. Diplomatic engagement intensified during President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé’s official visit to China from October 9 to 16, 2026. Following discussions with Chinese leadership, including Premier Li Qiang, the two nations elevated their relationship to a ‘China-Togo Community with a Shared Future in the New Era.’ This elevation involved signing thirteen multi-sectoral agreements covering finance, economy, security, agriculture, and digital trade, alongside a protocol for the partial cancellation of Togo’s public debt. A central pillar of this enhanced partnership is the alignment of China’s Belt and Road Initiative with Togo’s Vision 2040. To support Togo’s digital roadmap for 2026–2031, a memorandum of understanding was signed with Huawei Technologies in Shenzhen on October 16, 2026. This agreement targets connectivity, smart transport, and the modernization of customs services through technology transfer and local skill development. The partnership specifically focuses on energy infrastructure, intelligent transport systems, and the digitalization of customs to improve grid management and traffic flow. Togo continues to explore Chinese advancements in robotics, 6G, and artificial intelligence, while also supporting Xiamen to host the secretariat of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) agreement. Following the official visit, Togo is further leveraging Chinese expertise to enhance international trade. A delegation of 35 public and private sector representatives traveled to Beijing for a seminar on cross-border e-commerce.
