Tokyo festival Salmonella food poisoning outbreak
Overview
Following the Azabu-juban Noryo Matsuri festival held on August 22 and 23, approximately 78 people fell ill after consuming ‘cold crab ramen’ prepared by a local restaurant. Victims reported symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Medical experts identified Salmonella bacteria as the cause of the outbreak.
Chef Komeo, whose restaurant Kappo Komeo provided the food, received a seven-day business suspension from September 3 to September 9. Three individuals, including a 1-year-old boy, required hospitalization. Komeo has expressed intentions to compensate those affected and indicated he may consider closing his restaurant permanently.
The incident has sparked public debate regarding hygiene enforcement and accountability. While some social media commentary argued against the chef leaving the industry, scrutiny has also turned toward the Asakusa-based ramen shop Kanio, which Komeo co-manages. Although the problematic ramen was a specialty of Kanio, that establishment has continued normal operations.
