Tomato cultivation and maintenance challenges

Tomato cultivation involves managing environmental factors to prevent fruit damage. Key challenges include preventing fruit from cracking or bursting, which is primarily caused by sudden fluctuations in water intake due to irregular irrigation or heavy rainfall following dry periods.

Other contributing factors to skin failure include temperature shifts, excessive fertilization, and sunscald. To mitigate these issues, experts recommend maintaining steady moisture, providing protection from direct sunlight, and monitoring temperature swings. Additionally, gardeners have noted challenges such as variety identification difficulties when seeds are sown from mixed packets.

Beyond skin integrity, cultivation is impacted by ‘catfacing’, a physiological disorder where fruits appear as if multiple tomatoes have fused together. This deformation is not a contagious disease but results from cold weather during flowering, excessive soil nitrogen, mechanical damage to flowers, or pests such as thrips. While visually unappealing, these fruits are safe to consume if they lack mold or rot.

Disease management is also critical, particularly regarding late blight (Phytophthora infestans). This can infect plants even before spots are visible, especially in humid conditions. In such instances, only firm, spotless fruits should be harvested for indoor ripening at 20–25°C, as fruits with brown or glassy spots must be discarded due to the risk of deep-seated mold toxins.

Post-harvest quality is sensitive to storage. Storing fresh tomatoes in a refrigerator at temperatures below 10°C can damage cellular structure, reducing aromatic compounds by up to two-thirds after one week. If refrigeration is necessary, it is recommended to remove them at least one day before consumption to allow for partial flavor recovery.
