TORCH infections and neurodevelopmental risk study

Overview

A large-scale study from the Karolinska Institutet, published in JAMA Pediatrics, has established a link between congenital TORCH infections and significantly increased risks of autism and intellectual disabilities.

Analyzing health and education records for approximately 3.7 million people born in Sweden, researchers found that children infected with pathogens such as syphilis, rubella, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus, and herpesvirus are roughly three times more likely to receive an autism diagnosis. The risk for intellectual disability is more than seven times higher, with the risk for severe to profound intellectual disability reaching up to 30 times the rate of non-infected children.

While these infections are considered relatively rare and represent a small fraction of total autism cases, the study notes that affected children often show worse school grades during adolescence. Researchers emphasize that many of these infections are preventable through hygiene and vaccination.
