Tottenham Hotspur secures first Premier League win

Overview

Tottenham Hotspur secured their first Premier League victory of the 2026-27 season with a 3-1 win over Coventry City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The result moves Roberto De Zerbi’s side out of the relegation zone and into 16th place with six points after seven matches, leaving Sunderland at the bottom of the table. Coventry City, managed by Frank Lampard, remains in 17th place with the same number of points as Tottenham.

James Maddison, making his first Premier League start in approximately 18 months following a long-term ACL injury, opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a long-range strike assisted by Mohammed Kudus. This goal marked Maddison’s first Premier League goal in 611 days. Although Jack Rudoni equalized for Coventry City in the 49th minute following a deflection, Omar Marmoush restored the lead for the hosts in the 58th minute. Marmoush’s strike from the edge of the box marked his first goal for the club since joining from Manchester City.

Ben Davies eventually secured the win with a goal in stoppage time. The match also featured the return of Dejan Kulusevski, who appeared as a substitute in the 85th minute, marking his first appearance in 526 days following a major knee injury. To manage midfield absences caused by injuries, De Zerbi utilized a back-three formation.

Following the triumph, De Zerbi praised the team’s attitude and spirit. However, the victory was tempered by injury concerns, as both Tosin Adarabioyo and Andy Robertson were forced off during the match. Adarabioyo suffered a suspected injury during his full debut.
