Tourism and employment initiatives in Puglia
Overview
The Puglia regional government has approved the ‘FoodExp Skills 2026’ project, an initiative designed to innovate professional skills within the tourism and hospitality sectors. Funded by 85,000 euros from the 2026 regional budget, the project will be integrated into the ‘FoodExp – Food Life Experience’ International Forum in Lecce. It aims to function as an evidence-based field laboratory using multidisciplinary experts to identify professional needs. Complementary employment and educational activities have also been reported in the region. In Ostuni, the ‘October Job Day’ facilitated approximately 200 interviews across various sectors, including tourism and commerce. Additionally, in Ruvo di Puglia, the ‘Together We Can’ international job shadowing week took place under the Erasmus+ program, involving educational delegations from Sweden and Greece to promote professional exchange and teaching methodologies. Further efforts to bolster the regional tourism and agricultural sectors include new administrative measures for ‘oleoturismo’ (olive oil tourism). ANCI Puglia conducted a training session in Bari regarding Regional Law n. 9/2025, which focuses on simplifying procedures for local municipalities and production offices. This includes the implementation of a single, streamlined SCIA (Certified Notification of Commencement of Activity) to allow operators, such as mill owners, to launch activities more efficiently. Recent data from the second 2026 oil tourism report confirms Puglia has secured second place nationally for ‘oleoturismo’, capturing 28% of Italian tourist preferences and trailing only Tuscany at 29%. This growth is supported by the region's vast agricultural landscape, which includes approximately 60 million olive trees across 370,000 hectares and 148,127 olive-growing businesses. Consumer interest is high, with 71% of Italians expressing interest in dining among olive groves and 70% interested in olive oil tastings. The report also notes a link to wellness, as 65% of respondents are interested in the health benefits of extra virgin olive oil.
