Tourism and hospitality economic challenges

Tourism and hospitality sectors in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and Mazatlán, Mexico, have faced significant economic instability characterized by low hotel occupancy and business closures. In Puerto Vallarta, rising rents have led to the closure of at least 35 businesses in the historic center and Romantic Zone, while hotel occupancy in July remained below 68 percent. In Mazatlán, occupancy rates for early September dropped to between 20 and 25 percent, with industry representatives citing a contracted national economy and seasonal timing as contributing factors.

As the situation progressed, similar economic crises were reported in Mar del Plata, Argentina. In that region, smaller hotels face a critical survival phase due to high fixed costs and competition from apartment rentals, with warnings that one-third of local hotels could close. In Puerto Vallarta, the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry reported further restaurant closures and revenue drops of 20% to 30% compared to the previous year, attributed to reduced consumer spending and high commercial rents.
