The ‘La Perla del Sur’ Business Forum in Cienfuegos, Cuba, serves to promote tourism investments and identify opportunities for the non-state sector and Cubans living abroad. The event features approximately 240 participants, including representatives from five embassies, 35 Cuban and foreign companies, and 22 private enterprises, supplemented by roughly 30 virtual participants including tour operators and CEOs. During the forum, a portfolio of 10 specific hotel projects was presented. Local authorities highlighted Cienfuegos’s potential due to its natural and cultural assets, including its UNESCO World Heritage historic center. The event follows the implementation of 176 economic and social transformations on the island and seeks to attract foreign capital to diversify market sources despite financial limitations and US sanctions. Following the forum, Cienfuegos is expanding its foreign investment scope to include the commerce and gastronomy sectors. Proposed projects include the recovery of the Perla Hotel, which has remained unrenovated due to domestic financial deficits, as well as three mountain hotels, a villa, and three currently inactive restaurants. To ensure economic sustainability, the investment model intends to allow services to be sold in both foreign currency to recoup investments and in national currency to serve the local population. Additionally, the province is promoting initiatives from the Provincial Food Industry Company (EPIA), Cítricos Arimaos, and the maintenance and construction sectors, aligning with ongoing economic transformations and partial dollarization. In a recent development, the Cienfuegos Tourism Real Estate Company is expanding its leasing opportunities by opening seven previously unused properties to a wider range of actors, including foreign investors and small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
