Traffic enforcement and driving-related incidents have been reported in various regions of Greece. In the Attica basin, the Attica Traffic Police Directorate conducted a week-long operation from August 10 to August 17, 2026. During this period, authorities performed 14,032 breathalyzer tests, leading to 12 arrests for driving under the influence with blood alcohol levels exceeding 0.60 mg/l and 17 total arrests. The operation also targeted speeding, resulting in 137 violations, including instances where drivers reached speeds of 161 and 163 km/h in 70 km/h zones. In total, police issued 4,764 violations and impounded 653 vehicles. Subsequent incidents in late August included a fatal accident in Agios Anargyroi, where a 76-year-old man was killed after being struck by a car; the 28-year-old driver was arrested and faces manslaughter charges. In Agios Dimitrios, a 61-year-old taxi driver was arrested following a collision with a motorcyclist while driving under the influence, recording an alcohol level of 1.04 mg/l. Other reported incidents involved a man in Patras being detained for blocking a parking exit while appearing intoxicated and refusing a breathalyzer test, and an 80-year-old driver in Nea Erythraia who caused property damage at a local eatery after mistakenly pressing the accelerator instead of the brake while attempting to park. On September 1, a fatal collision occurred on the provincial road between Thebes and Livadeia, where a 56-year-old man died instantly when his car struck a truck carrying iron. Authorities are investigating if excessive speed was a factor. In Athens, a collision involving two motorcycles on Alexander Avenue resulted in three deaths; preliminary reports indicate none of the victims were wearing helmets. For the month of August, Attica authorities reported 346 accidents, 14 deaths, and 397 injuries, citing distracted driving and helmet violations as primary causes.
