The Austrian state of Tirol has implemented traffic restrictions to manage heavy transit volumes, particularly during peak travel seasons. To prevent motorists traveling between Germany and Italy from using small local roads to bypass highway congestion, driving bans have been introduced on specific secondary routes in the districts of Innsbruck, Kufstein, Imst, and Reutte. Authorities feed these restrictions into navigation systems to ensure GPS routing avoids restricted areas. To prevent the overloading of the regional road network, authorities utilize “block processing” (Blockabfertigung) for heavy goods vehicles. Trucks exceeding 7.5 tons are metered at the Kufstein-Nord area on the A12 Inntalautobahn, with approximately 250 vehicles permitted per hour. These measures can cause significant traffic backups extending into Germany, specifically affecting the A93 motorway between Brannenburg and Kiefersfelden. As of May 1, 2026, these driving bans on secondary routes have been reinstated. The regional government describes these restrictions as a “defensive measure” intended to reduce the burden on local residents caused by travelers attempting to bypass highway traffic jams. To assist with enforcement, traffic police feed these restrictions into the Ministry of the Interior’s information system to allow navigation providers to reroute drivers accordingly.
