On Sunday, October 4, 2026, major sporting and charity events caused widespread traffic disruptions across Greece. In Athens, the 18th ‘Greece Race for the Cure’—a 5-kilometer run and 2-kilometer walk organized by the Alma Zoi association Panhellenic Association of Women with Breast Cancer ‘Alma Zoes’ to support breast cancer prevention and awareness—drew over 58,000 participants. This event impacted major arteries including Alexandras Avenue, Patission, Akadimia, Amerikis, Mavromataia, 3rd of September, Marni, and Panepistimio streets from the early morning until approximately 13:00. Simultaneously, the ‘Run Greece Piraeus 2026’ caused traffic interruptions in Piraeus from 07:00 to 13:00, affecting areas such as Grigoriou Lampraki, Akti Moutsoupolou, and Iroon Polytechniou Avenue. The Piraeus event, held for the third consecutive year, featured 10km and 5km races, a children's race, and a Family Run. In Crete, the 11th International Crete Half Marathon in Arkalochori hosted over 6,000 runners from 52 countries. Additional regional activities were noted in Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, and Sitia.
