BC Transit and regional authorities in Nanaimo and Victoria are implementing various service and community initiatives. In late August, BC Transit announced seasonal service resumes in Nanaimo for the upcoming school year, alongside a new free transit program for youth aged 13 to 18. Additionally, a new direct service to the Victoria International Airport was scheduled to begin in early September. Following these transit adjustments, the province-wide GoByBike Week was set for September 19 to 25. To support the cycling initiative, the Victoria Regional Transit Commission and BC Transit announced that transit would be free for cyclists during the event, provided riders use bus bike racks or present a bike helmet. The week includes community rides, celebration stations with free snacks, and various prize opportunities. In a separate development, the federal government and the Capital Regional District have pledged over $1.2 million to the Island Corridor Foundation. This funding is designated for feasibility and technical studies to explore restoring a rail connection between Vic West and Langford. Known as the ‘Reconciliation Corridor Initiative’, this Indigenous-led effort involves the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. The studies will focus on corridor planning, land use, and identifying economic opportunities for the participating First Nations.
