Transpennine Route Upgrade infrastructure and community work

Overview

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) programme is advancing through both community investment and physical infrastructure improvements in Northern England.

In early September, the project launched the third year of its Community Fund, allocating £270,000 to support local groups, schools, and charities near the route between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds, and York. The fund provides grants to address socio-economic challenges and improve local spaces.

Following a 16-day intensive infrastructure programme conducted between 19 September and 4 October, major works in the Huddersfield area have been completed. These works included the installation of over 2km of new track to support capacity and allow faster services to overtake stopping trains, as well as 1.3km of track renewals and 900m of drainage upgrades.

To support future electrification, engineers installed more than 50 overhead line equipment masts and 50 steel structures, alongside preparatory work on the A62 Leeds Road bridge. Station improvements were also finalized: Huddersfield station received platform and subway extensions and the restoration of its historic roof canopy, while Deighton station received platform extensions and a new accessible footbridge. Signalling upgrades were implemented to enhance reliability and performance. The programme continues to drive local regeneration, with studies indicating a 33% increase in planning applications near Huddersfield station since the project's funding was confirmed.
