Various musical events are being organized to honor the legacy of the renowned Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis. Singer Thodoris Fereris is preparing a tribute concert at the Lycabettus Theatre, scheduled for September 22. Fereris has shared rehearsal footage of signature songs, such as ‘Aprilis’, marking a significant artistic shift into a repertoire traditionally associated with prominent Greek musical voices. Angelos Theodorakis, the composer’s grandson, has expressed support for artists like Fereris, arguing that the repertoire must be continuously performed and reproduced to remain vital, stating the work “belongs to the whole world and should not be kept hidden in drawers.” To commemorate the fifth anniversary of the composer’s death, the Attica Region and the Mikis Theodorakis Folk Orchestra are co-organizing a ‘Magic Night’ concert at the Port of Lavrio. This event features performers including Giota Nega, Savveria Margiola, and Angelos Theodorakis. Attica Governor Nikos Hardalias stated that Theodorakis’s work has become “a part of the history and collective memory of the Greek people.” Further tributes include a major summer concert at Peristeri Grove on September 12, focusing on Theodorakis’s musical settings of Greek poetry. In Thessaloniki, the musical-theatrical tribute ‘Mprosá stin eoniótita’ (Before Eternity) is scheduled for September 19 at the 31st Primary School. Featuring Charikleia Papari, the performance aims to explore Theodorakis’s life journey from his childhood in Chios to his political and creative contributions. Reflecting on his grandfather, Angelos Theodorakis noted that while their relationship was not traditional, the composer was a major role model. He recalled the composer as a “tender person who was open to everyone” and noted that his most significant advice was the encouragement to “never stop working and writing music.” In addition to live performances, the musical theater production ‘The Treasure of Mikis’ has been extended at the Music Library until November 29.
