The title change occurred after rapper Lil Yachty participated in a five-minute challenge against Corbin, which allowed Williams to secure an immediate championship opportunity. Following this victory, the rivalry between Williams and Corbin escalated, leading SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis to mandate a steel cage match for the September 25, 2026, episode of SmackDown at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Aldis stated the cage stipulation was necessary to “escalate the rivalry and prevent further interference.” During the scheduled match, which served as a decisive rubber match in their ongoing rivalry, Williams successfully retained the United States Championship. The contest included a superplex from Corbin at the top of the cage and interference from Williams' manager, Lil Yachty.
