Triumph Moto2 engine development for and 2027 MotoGP launch
Triumph Motorcycles and MotoGP have announced the development of a new racing engine for the Moto2 World Championship, scheduled to debut in the 2027 season. This marks the most significant technical evolution since Triumph became the category’s exclusive engine supplier in 2019. Based on data from approximately 2 million kilometers of racing, the new engine will feature a redesigned cylinder head, a low-inertia valve train, and optimized intake and exhaust ports to increase airflow. These changes aim to achieve a higher compression ratio, resulting in a 6% increase in peak power and improved torque across the RPM range, while reducing the engine's weight by 2 kg. While the specific displacement will move away from the current 765 cc configuration, Triumph has been collaborating with chassis manufacturers for 12 months to prepare for new mounting points and air intake positioning. Regarding the 2027 season launch, MotoGP has confirmed the event will be held on Botafogo beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on February 21. The event, set against the backdrop of Sugarloaf Mountain, will feature all teams, riders, and manufacturers. The program is expected to include official team presentations, rider interviews, manufacturer exhibition booths, live entertainment featuring international artists, and official merchandise sales. This selection follows the success of the 2026 Grand Prix in Goiânia, which attracted nearly 150,000 spectators. MotoGP CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta noted that choosing Brazil is a way to “build on the connection with passionate local fans.” fans,” while Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes expressed enthusiasm for using the event to showcase the city’s natural beauty and sporting spirit.
