Minister of Public Works and Transportation Faiz Sucuoğlu has outlined several infrastructure priorities, including the restructuring of the Ports Department to meet international standards, fiber optic expansion, and road safety improvements. A primary focus has been the renovation of the Değirmenlik-Çatalköy Road, also known as the Girne Mountain Road. Previously described as a ‘death road’ due to frequent accidents, the project involves widening and asphalt work to enhance safety and tourism connectivity. This work is part of the TRNC Highway Master Plan with support from the Republic of Turkey. As of October 2026, the renovation is nearing completion, with the road expected to be operational within a few months. Recent updates from the Ministry include plans to implement smart signaling systems at several locations in Nicosia to alleviate congestion and the installation of LED lighting poles at Girne Port. Regarding road safety and revenue, Sucuoğlu noted that a Court of Accounts report identified ‘serious deficiencies’ in AI-supported traffic cameras, some of which are inactive, leading to state losses. Further planned developments include expanding free parking at Ercan Airport, beginning fiber optic infrastructure projects within the next month to 1.5 months, and constructing a meteorology tower at Ercan Airport. The Minister also emphasized the need for renovations to passenger waiting areas and facilities at the ports.
