Trump administration government reorganization
Overview
The Trump administration has undertaken significant restructuring of federal agencies and spending through executive actions and oversight by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
A primary focus of this reorganization was the dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Following Executive Order 14169, which froze foreign assistance for a 90-day assessment, approximately 83% of USAID’s programs were terminated by March 2025. By July 1, the agency’s remaining functions were absorbed into the State Department, with officials citing spending on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs as a justification for the move.
Efforts to reduce federal costs via DOGE have seen discrepancies between projected and actual results. While the initiative aimed for $2 trillion in annual savings, official figures indicated approximately $215 billion in savings. However, an analysis by the Partnership for Public Service (PSP) suggested that losses in productivity, legal settlements, and indemnities cost roughly $135 billion, resulting in a net saving of approximately $80 billion. These administrative actions have also been characterized by the removal of federal employees based on political stances and the dismantling of investigative units.
