These signs advise visitors that exhibitions contain “false or inaccurate information” and suggest they seek history elsewhere. On July 29, Trump signed an executive order requiring warning signs outside Smithsonian museums that label DEI-focused exhibits—such as the 1619 Project—as presenting a politically driven agenda that downplays America’s founding principles. The order echoes activist historian David Barton’s criticism that the museum understates Christianity’s role in U.S. history. Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch III, whose 2020–2024 compensation exceeded $4.4 million, defended the institution’s scholarly independence as the controversy sparked heated debate in Congress and among museum staff. On August 2, the White House announced a proposal to cut the Smithsonian’s annual budget request to below $1 billion—the first sub-$1 billion request since FY 2020—while launching a comprehensive review of the museum’s exhibits, programs, leadership, and records. A 162-page report recommending sweeping reforms was released, and a congressional hearing highlighted the dispute over the museum’s displays and their historical accuracy. On August 4, historian Dr. Jody Edward Ginn argued that recent exhibits prioritize activism over objective education, echoing administration claims of ideological bias. The administration maintains that current leadership is unreliable in providing an “honest and grateful account of American history.” In early September, the administration escalated pressure by threatening to withdraw executive-agency support unless leadership changes occur.
