TSA checkpoint officer standing mandate
Overview
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has implemented a nationwide policy requiring officers who verify passenger identification and travel documents to remain standing. To enforce this, the agency is removing chairs from document-check podiums at commercial airport checkpoints.
TSA officials stated the directive is intended to reinforce security posture, increase alertness, and improve the hospitality experience by ensuring officers are ‘on their feet and alert’ to create a professional environment. The agency noted that officers work in rotations, typically spending about 15 minutes at these stations before moving to other duties.
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) TSA Council 100 has strongly opposed the mandate, describing it as a ‘disregard for workers’ rights and safety.’ The union argues that the chairs provide essential ergonomic support for employees working on hard surfaces and claims they were not formally consulted before the policy began implementation.
This shift follows the confirmation of TSA Administrator David Cummins and his ‘Horizon 25’ strategic initiative. While the directive applies to most TSA-staffed airports, approximately 20 U.S. airports utilize private security screeners under the Screening Partnership Program rather than federal officers.
