TSG Hoffenheim has faced consecutive narrow defeats in the opening matches of the Bundesliga season. In the season opener, 1. FC Köln defeated Hoffenheim 3-2. Despite trailing twice, Köln rallied behind an equalizer from Said El Mala and two goals from new signing Thijs Dallinga. Köln goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe also saved a penalty to maintain the lead. In the second matchday, Hoffenheim suffered a similar 3-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund.
