Overview
In August 2026, the province of Tucumán held various commemorations to mark the 60th anniversary of the closure of 11 regional sugar mills. These closures, mandated by a 1966 decree during the military dictatorship of General Juan Carlos Onganía, resulted in the loss of over 50,000 jobs and caused a massive exodus of more than 250,000 residents.
Initial commemorations included the ‘Marcha de las Antorchas’ (March of the Torches), which brought delegations from eleven localities to Banda del Río Salí to preserve collective memory and seek historical reparation.
Subsequent events were held at the Museo de la Industria Azucarera in San Miguel de Tucumán, featuring the exhibition ‘El azúcar menos dulce’. Historians noted that while the military government justified the closures as industry rationalization, the policy facilitated the concentration of wealth among specific sectors and contributed to social mobilization and political radicalization in the region.
