Tuen Mun child abuse investigation

Hong Kong police arrested the parents of a young girl in Tuen Mun following the circulation of a viral video. The footage showed the child struggling to carry approximately 16 to 20 cans of beer while her father berated her, calling her a “useless person”. Authorities arrested the parents on suspicion of “ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of a child or young person”.

The parents initially claimed the incident was a misunderstanding intended to “train her muscles”. As the investigation progressed, the mother stated she needed the child’s help due to poor health and a desire to save money, while the stepfather maintained the heavy lifting was physical training and denied physical abuse.

The case has sparked significant public outcry and scrutiny regarding the family’s use of Comprehensive Social Security Assistance, with acquaintances suggesting potential misuse of welfare benefits. While the girl’s school and the Social Welfare Department have moved to provide counseling and support, public discourse has focused on the child’s psychological well-being and the family's living conditions.
