Tunisia HFC reduction and refrigerant regulation
Overview
Tunisia has initiated a strategic plan to reduce the consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are potent greenhouse gases used in cooling technologies. To meet the objectives of the Kigali Amendment, the government aims for a 24% reduction in HFC consumption by 2030. This initiative focuses on transitioning to energy-efficient air conditioning units to alleviate pressure on the national electrical grid and reduce CO2 emissions.
To support this transition, the state has invested 3 million dinars to equip industrial units with international-standard production devices and has allocated approximately 3 million dollars to modernize manufacturing. Technical capacity building is also underway, with hundreds of technicians and trainers being certified to European standards.
Building on these targets, Tunisia plans to implement a ban on the import and local manufacture of various devices using certain high-climate-impact refrigerants starting January 1, 2027. This ban is expected to affect domestic split-system air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, and water dispensers.
