Tunisian healthcare system development and reform

Overview

Tunisia is implementing various initiatives to strengthen its healthcare sector, focusing on personnel recruitment, infrastructure modernization, and economic development.

Initial efforts included large-scale recruitment drives by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of National Defense. These drives aimed to fill critical roles, such as public health pharmacists and senior military health technicians specializing in nursing, medical biology, radiology, and anesthesia.

Building on these staffing needs, the country has moved toward broader structural reforms and economic expansion. Supported by the World Bank and the Pandemic Fund, a 125 million USD project is underway to modernize over 50 public health laboratories and upgrade emergency operation centers. Additionally, Tunisia is positioning its medical sector as an economic driver through medical tourism, which attracts over 500,000 foreign patients annually for medical procedures and wellness activities.
