During the 81st UN General Assembly, Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti addressed several international and domestic priorities. On the international stage, Nafti condemned Israeli actions in Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem, describing them as “acts of genocide against Palestinians.” He specifically opposed measures targeting the historical status of Jerusalem, such as home demolitions and forced displacement, and warned that attempts to dismantle UNRWA aim to “liquidate the Palestinian cause.” He also called for international attention to conflicts in Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Libya, and Yemen. Regarding domestic affairs, Nafti outlined Tunisia’s commitment to the reform process initiated in July 2021. He emphasized adherence to the July 25, 2022, Constitution and highlighted the importance of economic, social, and climate rights. The Minister noted that national progress relies on the participation of women and youth in public life and expressed a goal to attract international investment through diversified partnerships. Following these addresses, Nafti met with Hanna Tetteh, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), to discuss the UN-led political process in Libya. Nafti reaffirmed Tunisia’s support for a global political settlement that preserves Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that any solution must be “fully Libyan-led” without the marginalization of Libyan parties. He expressed Tunisia’s readiness to host consultations under UN patronage and highlighted the importance of the tripartite consultation mechanism involving Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt to unify regional visions and support a sustainable solution.
