On October 13, 2026, Duane ‘Keefe D’ Davis was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for his role in the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur. The sentence consists of 20 years to life for first-degree murder and an additional 20 years to life for a deadly weapon enhancement. This sentencing follows his August conviction. Prosecutors successfully argued that Davis, a 63-year-old former South Side Compton Crips leader, orchestrated the retaliatory drive-by shooting on the Las Vegas Strip. While not the shooter, Davis was found to have organized the assault and provided the firearm in response to an altercation involving his nephew, Orlando Anderson, and members of Shakur’s entourage at the MGM Grand casino. During the trial, Davis’s own statements were central; a member of the group Outlawz, Napoleon, noted that Davis essentially ‘told on himself’ by attempting to frame his involvement as entertainment. Prosecutors also played audio in which Davis claimed he expected payment from Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs following the shooting, though no charges were filed against Combs. The prosecution’s case relied heavily on Davis’s public statements, media interviews, and his 2019 memoir, ‘Compton Street Legend’, which effectively voided previous immunity agreements. During the hearing, Judge Carli Kierny criticized Davis, stating, ‘You don’t get to take a man from his family, you don’t get to take his very life, his whole future from him, and just walk away from it. Especially when that man is Tupac Shakur.’ Members of Shakur’s family offered emotional testimony, with his sister, Sekyiwa, stating the loss had ‘crippled my family emotionally.’ Davis continues to maintain his innocence, arguing his previous admissions were lies intended to secure freedom from a drug case. His attorney, Michael Sanft, has announced plans to appeal the verdict.
