Turkey biodiversity and forest conservation efforts

Overview

Turkey has implemented several initiatives to enhance biodiversity and forest conservation. The General Directorate of Forestry expanded the number of conservation forests from 55 to 60, increasing the total protected area to 258,387 hectares. This effort is intended to mitigate climate change effects such as drought and desertification while supporting the nation’s ‘2053 Net Zero Emission’ and ‘Green Development’ goals.

In conjunction with forest protection, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has completed 21 ecological bridges across road and railway networks to safeguard wildlife migration routes. These include 16 highway bridges and five railway bridges, including the first of its kind built on a high-speed rail line globally. The ministry plans to construct 19 additional highway ecological bridges in strategic locations.
