Turkey is expanding its natural gas production in the Black Sea through the deployment of the Osman Gazi floating production platform. Scheduled to depart from Filyos Port, the platform is destined for the Sakarya Gas Field, located approximately 170 kilometers from the coast. In October 2026, the Osman Gazi platform was officially deployed to the Sakarya Gas Field following a ceremony at Filyos Port in Zonguldak attended by Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, via video message, described the facility as the “first factory of the Blue Homeland” and a key component of the “Turkey Century” vision. The massive industrial structure measures 298.5 meters in length, 56 meters in width, and 29.5 meters in depth, featuring a flare tower that reaches 96 meters. Equipped with 21 different processing modules and capacity for 140 personnel, the platform is designed to operate for a 20-year mission. This deployment aims to double daily production at the Sakarya Gas Field from 9.5 million cubic meters to 20 million cubic meters. By the beginning of 2027, officials project that the increased production will allow one in every three Turkish households to utilize domestic natural gas, increasing the number of households supplied from 4 million to 8 million. Looking further ahead, the government aims to reach a production capacity of 45 million cubic meters per day by 2028. A second production platform is currently under construction and is expected to arrive in Turkey in the first quarter of 2028. The project is expected to provide an annual economic contribution of approximately $3.5 billion and is intended to strengthen energy security. Minister Alparslan Bayraktar noted that the discovery of 785 billion cubic meters of natural gas in the Black Sea has fundamentally altered the domestic production outlook.
