In late July 2026 the death of Fethullah Gülen left a leadership vacuum in the Hizmet movement, prompting analysts to debate whether the group would preserve Gülen’s original teachings or reshape them for new conditions. At the same time, Turkey’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), reaffirmed its founding principles while criticizing economic decline, inflation, youth emigration and perceived social decay. Within ten days the focus shifted to the CHP’s own internal crisis. Reports documented frequent leadership turnovers, protests outside party offices, removal of local officials and accusations of corruption influencing municipal appointments. Observers linked the party’s turmoil to broader challenges faced by social‑democratic parties in Europe, warning that eroding public trust could weaken the CHP’s role in Turkish politics. By the end of July, three mayors elected under the CHP – Eren Ali Bingöl (Tuzla), Orhan Çerkez (Çekmeköy) and acting Şile mayor Sacit Aslan – resigned via the e‑Devlet platform and formally joined the Justice and Development Party (AKP) during an AKP Istanbul Provincial Advisory Council meeting. Independent MP Ümit Dikbayır and IYI Party MP Mehmet Mustafa Gürban were also slated to switch to the AKP on 14 August, the party’s anniversary. The defections, part of an AKP strategy to boost its parliamentary and local‑government strength, deepened the CHP’s internal strain and raised concerns about further erosion of its municipal base. The rapid promotion of the newcomers sparked criticism from veteran AKP members, highlighting a parallel “transfer crisis” within the ruling party.
